Questions Of Exercise ? With so many different types of exercise out there, sometimes it feels like a minefield! Well not anymore, in each issue, we’ll take you through a step by step guide to the different types of exercise and their benefits. Generally speaking, there are four different types of exercises. These are: Anaerobic exercises which focus on increas- ing muscle strength and include weight training. Flexibility exercises focus on improving the range of motion of joints and muscles and include stretching. Aerobic exercises focus on increasing cardiovascular endur- ance and include activities such as running, walking, cycling and hiking. Stability exercises strengthen the core and improve balance. In this issue, we look at the benefits of Aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise Aerobic exercise is also sometimes known as cardiovascular exercise because of its various benefits in cardiovascu- lar health. It involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body. This type of exercise involves moderate lev- els of intensity for ex- tended periods of time for example run- ning a long distance at a moderate level of in- tensity. Some of the recognized benefits of doing regu- lar aerobic exercise in- clude Stronger heart. The heart muscle is strengthened and en- larged, to improve its ability to pump blood to all parts of the body and reduce the heart rate when at rest. Improved muscle health by doing regular Aerobic exercise, you will be gradually im- proving your muscle health as aerobic exer- cise stimulates the growth of tiny blood vessels (capillaries) in muscles which help our bodies deliver oxygen to muscles. This can improve overall circulation and reduce blood pressure. A big reason to do aerobic exercise regularly in our book! Weight loss Aerobic exercise may help lose weight when combined with eating a healthy diet and appropriate strength training (anaerobic exercise). Improved breathing: the muscles involved in breathing are ma d e s t r o n g e r through aerobic ex- ercise which helps the flow of air in and out of the lungs.
